About the Charity

This charity was set up by Irish paediatric oncologist Dr Trish Scanlan from Bray. For over 8 years she has dedicated her time to treating children with cancer in Tanzania. Her story is truly remarkable. When she started less than 100 children each year were being treated with a 5% survival. Thanks to her extraordinary and selfless work, today over 500 children are being treated annually by Dr Trish and her team with survival rates now up to 50%, a massive improvement.

Not only that, in the 8 years of treating the children she has also found time to build a cancer ward, a hostel, classrooms for children and a skills room for parents. All her services are provided free. Dr Trish has also set up a Masters Programme at the University in Dar es Salaam to train doctors to be paediatric oncologists with a similar third level programme now introduced for nurses.

There is a link below to a short video clip showing some of the work of this outstanding woman who Pat Kenny described as a ‘miracle doctor’ during a UCD awards ceremony to recognise her achievements.

Marathon des Sables

The Marathon des Sables is known as the toughest footrace in the world involving a 254 km race over 6 days across the Sahara desert. The toughest stage of the race is the 81.5 km run on day 4. The rules of the race require you to be self sufficient meaning you have to carry all your food, sleeping bag etc on your back. Only limited water and a tent each night is provided to those taking part.

Their Lives Matter really need help this year. I am Chair of this Irish charity and any funds raised by Thomas and myself running the Marathon des Sables will go directly to the charity to allow Dr Trish continue her extraordinary work in Dar es Salaam.

I would hugely appreciate any support that can be offered. Money can be donated by either following this link to the iDonate page–s-fundraising-page.html
