Fartlek Summer 2015

Patricia has put together a Fartlek program kicking off this Monday 13th, here’s the details.

Farklek 2015 Kick OffAs you all know Fartlek will start on the 13th of April @19:00 and we meet at the Magazine fort car park.

AnneMarie, Mick and Steve are helping me with the sessions, but if anyone is interested to help out, let me know.

Just something to think of when you join us Monday:

  • Try to bring a stopwatch or your running watch to record your lap times. This is to ensure you get the most out of the sessions.
  • Mainly it will be off road but ensure you wear clothing that is visible, I guess most of us do but just in case.
  • Bring your water bottle.
  • Be on time

You must be a registered member to take part in Fartlek.

See you next week!!!

Pride Run charity

Thanks to those members who submitted a proposal for our charity partner for the 2014 5k Pride Run. Following evaluation of all nominations, the committee have decided to partner with BeLonG To.

BeLonG To is working to provide an empowering and safe community for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people, by building a society that supports, includes and accepts them for who they are.

See the attached or their website www.belongto.org

We’re excited about working with them, and they’re keen to use their extensive network to promote the race.

Don’t forget the third annual race is on Friday 20 June; now that we have our charity partner, we’ll step up the promotion and planning! Further details will follow over the next while.

London Front Runners visit

A few visitors from LFR will be joining us for our run and breakfast this Saturday 1 March. We’ll be informally meeting up with them again in the Front Lounge from 9pm onwards, so if you’re in town, pop in and have a drink!

Great Ireland 10k/AAI Championships

The Great Ireland 10k on Saturday 6 April in the Phoenix Park is one of the biggest participation events in Ireland. It’s also the AAI 10k club championship, which pits AAI clubs against each other, and we’re looking to enter a men’s and women’s team to compete as DFR.

If we get enough interest – we need eight on a team – the club will cover the entry fee.

Please let David Lee know ASAP if you’re interested in competing for DFR.

Annual quiz

We’re finalising a date and venue, but provisionally keep Tuesday 15 April free! Start practising your Trivial Pursuit….Confirmation to follow.

Track training/fartlek

Training continues every Monday 19.00-20.00 at Donore Harriers, Chapelizod. No need for prior experience. no need to book, just show up. (Registered members only.)

Kinvara half marathon

Good luck to the big DFR contingent running this Saturday 1 March.

Nice half marathon Sun 27 April

We have a few members still expressing interest in travelling, if there is a vacancy in your hotel, please let me know.

Remember you need a medical cert signed by a doctor to fully complete registration (so can be done after entry). It’s your responsibility to have it, neither DFR nor the AAI can help. The form can be posted, faxed or submitted online in advance.

That’s it for now, see you Saturday.

Fartlek Training

Our winter Fartlek training kicks off this evening at 7pm, we have booked a number of weeks at the Donore Harriers track in Chapelizod, and depending on attendance and coaches, we will continue up until the end of November.

Anne Marie and Andy will look after the sessions, if you’re interested in running one yourself we’d be delighted just let us know, there are changing facilities available in the clubhouse if anyone wants to use them before or after training.

Parking is available but Donore have installed a barrier to manage access to the car park, we have a key fob but need to manage entry and exit, can you ensure you arrive before 7 pm if you need parking, training starts at 7 pm sharp.

There’s no cost to members for the training and no need to book, just turn up on the night.

Fartlek is moving to 6:30pm to try and get 2 more weeks while it’s bright out, same spot at the Magazine Car Park. We’re looking into kicking off the winter session in Donore Harriers, more details to follow.

And it’s that time of year again, X Factor has started and we’re moving our Wednesday run back to the Garda HQ, don’t forget your hi-vis gear if you’re heading out.

News 1st July

Dublin Pride Festival

imageHopefully everyone had a good day and night out; thanks to those members who marched behind the DFR banner or popped up around town to support.

Thanks especially to Kieran Cooney and Andy Chambers, our highly-trained official marshals who bravely put themselves in the firing line in case of any danger, and where very well accessorized.

We had fewer DFRs marching this year, so if anyone has any suggestions as to how DFR could better engage with or partake in Pride 2014, please let us know on the Committee.

The summer course of pilates starts this Tuesday 2 July at 7pm in St Andrew’s Resource Centre, 114 Pearse St.

It’s E60 (no subsidy from DFR) for the six week course, payable up front, and don’t forget your mat and the application form.

Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire

Thanks to Kieran Cooney for organising this, contact him on dfrsecretary@gmail.com with any last-minute queries or interest.

Fartlek continues every Monday at 7pm at the Magazine Fort in the Phoenix Park.  Good luck to Anne Marie who’s leading the session this week!

Rock n Roll half marathon

Discounted entry for this race in Dublin on Monday 5 August (the bank holiday) expires tomorrow 1 July.  Sign up if you’re interested and we’ll look to enter a DFR Team.  So far, Seamus Moore, Dermot McCarthy and Declan Treanor have expressed an interest, so one more needed….

Achill half marathon

We’ve had a few late withdrawals from Achill so if anyone has a race number or accommodation to offer, please let the club know.

If anyone needs a lift over, or can offer a lift, please post on Facebook or email Rónán.

News Update

Our summer fartlek kicks off next Monday 27 May at 19.00 at the Magazine Fort in the Phoenix Park. For those of you not familiar with it, it’s a gut-wrenching, muscle-straining, body-aching, masochistic way to spend a Monday evening. But seriously, fartlek is a very structured training programme with hills, sprints and intervals. It’s a great complement to standard training for pretty much any run, particularly the longer distances. Thanks to Steve Connolly for taking this again; if anyone would like to help out with the odd session, please let Steve or myself know.

DFR 5k Pride Run

Hard to believe we’re now only one month away from Friday 21 June! Thanks to all who have volunteered to help out on the day – we have enough stewards etc for the moment, so I strongly urge every other DFR member to sign up as soon as possible. It’s your club’s run! You each have to make it a success.

Please also encourage friends, family, colleagues to sign up as well. Why not enter a workplace team for a little competitive edge? A gentle, flat 5k run on a fine summer’s evening* is a very achievable target for most people.

While we can’t register minors under 16, they’re very welcome to participate on the evening if under parental supervision and responsibility.

* fine summer evening not guaranteed. No refunds!

Cultural night out

“What am I to do for high culture, now that the Gay Theatre Festival and Eurovision are over?” I hear you ask plaintively. Well, yet again, our music maestro Seamus is to the rescue with a suggestion for an evening out in the National Concert Hall. In his own words:

Dear Frontrunners, dear friends

The final concert in the National Symphony Orchestra season takes place on Friday week, 31st May in National Concert Hall at 8pm. The concert is a really, really good one i.e.

Tchaikovsky, 1st Piano Concerto – big, bold, hear of sleeve melodies – virtuoso piano playing by soloist Kirill Gerstein. Shostakovich, Symphony No. 5 – dramatic masterpiece, bold intensity and striking contrasts – fantastic music!

If you are free and fancy coming along, just go online to NCH.ie to book a ticket. We generally go to choir balcony, tickets are only €10. Book soon if going as this one will be popular!

Meeting in Conrad Hilton across the road from 7pm for a drink in advance (downstairs bar) or else in Foyer of NCH (beside Music Box CD shop) at 7.50.

Concert ends 9.45pm or so – plenty of time for us to paint the town red afterwards!!

Grateful if you could let me know if going.

Your in running and in music!!
