Table Quiz 2016

Wednesday was our annual table quiz, a big thank you to our members who came out to support on the night and brought friends and family, this is our biggest fundraising event and your support is appreciated.

I’d also like to thank our host Sinéad Burke who has hosted our quiz for the last 3 years, The George Bar for having us and all the help they provided on the night, the volunteers from the club, Martha, Anne Maire, Claire, Siobhan, John K, John C and Eithne, along with the committee especially Gregory for all his work and fab questions 🙂

Finally a thank you to those who donated prizes, Kevin, Leo, Jacqui, Steve Boylan, Gareth, The Garden Powerscourt, Nancy Hands, The George Bar and the Phoenix Cafe.

We raised €670 for our club and thanks to the winning team generously donating their winnings, we raised €1,100 for our Pride Run Charity the LGBT Helpline.

Thank you

About the Charity

This charity was set up by Irish paediatric oncologist Dr Trish Scanlan from Bray. For over 8 years she has dedicated her time to treating children with cancer in Tanzania. Her story is truly remarkable. When she started less than 100 children each year were being treated with a 5% survival. Thanks to her extraordinary and selfless work, today over 500 children are being treated annually by Dr Trish and her team with survival rates now up to 50%, a massive improvement.

Not only that, in the 8 years of treating the children she has also found time to build a cancer ward, a hostel, classrooms for children and a skills room for parents. All her services are provided free. Dr Trish has also set up a Masters Programme at the University in Dar es Salaam to train doctors to be paediatric oncologists with a similar third level programme now introduced for nurses.

There is a link below to a short video clip showing some of the work of this outstanding woman who Pat Kenny described as a ‘miracle doctor’ during a UCD awards ceremony to recognise her achievements.

Marathon des Sables

The Marathon des Sables is known as the toughest footrace in the world involving a 254 km race over 6 days across the Sahara desert. The toughest stage of the race is the 81.5 km run on day 4. The rules of the race require you to be self sufficient meaning you have to carry all your food, sleeping bag etc on your back. Only limited water and a tent each night is provided to those taking part.

Their Lives Matter really need help this year. I am Chair of this Irish charity and any funds raised by Thomas and myself running the Marathon des Sables will go directly to the charity to allow Dr Trish continue her extraordinary work in Dar es Salaam.

I would hugely appreciate any support that can be offered. Money can be donated by either following this link to the iDonate page

Pride Run 2016 Charity

LGBT Helpline LogoWe’re delighted to announce that LGBT Helpline have been chosen as this year’s charity for the 5th annual Pride Run.

The LGBT Helpline is a national support service for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender people and their families and friends.

The service was established in 2010 by seven local LGBT helplines, who shared a vision to create an infrastructure to enable them to offer support and information nationally through their network of trained volunteers.

Funds raised from the Pride Run will help training of volunteers, and to fund the continued work of such an important service.
