News 31st March
Here’s our latest news update, lots going on with races, trips away, our new gear, update on the Pride Run and lots more.
Great Ireland Run
Sun 6 April
We’re still waiting on details from the AAI on team structures. If you have a spare DFR singlet or DFR t-shirt you’re willing to temporarily loan out and are not running in the event, please bring it along on Monday, Wednesday or Saturday as we will probably need additional ones for team participants. We expect all team runners to wear a DFR t-shirt or singlet. We promise to return it laundered!
Our quiz takes place in the Front Lounge on Wednesday 16 April. This year, the proceeds from the raffle will go to BelongTo, our charity partner for the Pride Run.
If you or your employer can provide small prizes or donations or sponsorship for the raffle, we’d be grateful – and so will BelongTo.
I’d encourage all members to attend with friends, family and colleagues! Table entry fee is E40 for a team of four people, with cash prizes. Our quiz mistress is none other than Minnie Melange. Table entry fees go to the club, it’s our only fundraiser for the year.
Winter track training in Donore is now finished. Thanks to Andy and Anne Marie for their input over a long, cold, dark winter. The hard work paid off though, we had lots of improvements in times recently.
Fartlek will now take place every Monday at 19.00 (finally, daylight!) from the Magazine Fort in the Phoenix Park. Please let Andy or Anne Marie know if you’d be willing to help out with the odd session.
Couch to 5k
We’ve had some members enquire as to whether we’re doing this programme again in advance of the 2014 Pride Run.
Last year, a small number of volunteers gave a considerable amount of time to run this over the 8-10 weeks in advance of the 2013 Pride Run. While a good number of participants did successfully complete the run, it was somewhat disappointing that we only had two join DFR afterwards (and great to see that Dave and Darran are still with us!).
For 2014, we’re running the programme again starting on April 12th, and Joachim has volunteered to act as coordinator with some other volunteers, we could always do with more so let us know if you can help out one of the weeks.
Pride Run 2014
The third Pride Run 5k will be held in the Phoenix park on Friday 20 June – that’s only three months away! A lot of behind the scenes planning and work has already gone on, and we’re meeting with charity partner BelongTo shortly to get the promotional side underway.
One element critical to the success of the run, and vital to ensure a fair return to the charity, is sponsorship. We’re preparing a proposal document setting out a range of sponsorship options the Run can offer companies.
For example, in the last two years we’ve had blue chip sponsors such as PwC (title sponsor in 2012 and 2013), but also Irish Ferries, Microsoft, Arthur Cox and Total Produce, so the event has significant credibility.
If you think your employer or other company you have connections with could be interested in partnering with us, please let Race Director Andy Chambers or myself know as soon as possible.
We have a good crowd travelling to Nice for the half marathon and 10k on Sunday 27 April. Flights are still apparently available at a reasonable cost, but hurry if you plan on going. Don’t forget you need a medical cert to race in France. See http://www.nicesemimarathon.com/v14/
If you are going and are interested in a group meal out on the Sunday night after the race, please let me know ASAP so I can gauge numbers and approach a restaurant with a booking. We did this after Rotterdam last year, and had a brilliant night out with 33 DFRs for dinner and more…
A DFR committee meeting is scheduled for next Wednesday 2 April. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let Club Secretary Kieran know by Monday 31st March.
We’ve now received our fabulous new DFR jackets (thanks Martha!) so if you haven’t paid for yours yet, please do so now. Val has them for distribution; orders may be placed for additional jackets now that you’ve seen how great everyone looks.
We’re also looking at new club t-shirts and singlets.
We’re looking to expand our race calendar for the rest of the year, but upcoming events with DFR participation include:
6 April – Paris marathon
6 April – Great Ireland 10k (and AAI championship)
21 April – Boston marathon
27 April – Nice half marathon & 10k
4 May – Hamburg marathon
31 May – Stockholm marathon
