Fartlek goes on tour tonight, we will be meeting outside of St. Fintan’s Cemetery at the base of Howth Hill at the usual time of 7pm. The route is less than 5 miles, involves only one hill and has some fantastic views.
News 24th July
Not that we’re complaining, but this hot weather wasn’t made for Irish runners, and we do have lots of other DFR stuff happening over the next while. Our Wednesday and Saturday runs continue of course, but we’re staying in the shade as much as possible. Remember to stay hydrated!
Gaze Film Festival Sat 3 Aug
Andy has been all cultured again and has come up with the following suggestions:
Right I’ve eventually read the program and chosen 2 movies, both are on Saturday 3 August at 8:30pm in the Lighthouse Cinema in Smithfield, Dublin 7:
Option 1 – Margarita
Option 2 – Let My People Go
Margarita has gotten better reviews, and that’s the one I’ll be going to, but people may prefer the other one. We’ll head to the Front Lounge for a few drinks afterwards and a debrief.
If you’re interested, the book the tickets yourself (see http://www.gaze.ie/) and just turn up!
DFR summer hike Sun 25 Aug
It’s now a popular annual event, and we’re taking to the hills again on Sunday 25 August for a trek through the forest trails of Glenmalure in Co Wicklow. It’s an easy enough walk, no hiking boots or specialist gear is needed. Thanks to Shay Foody for organising and leading this. Further details will follow.
DFR summer BBQ Sat 31 Aug
We’re in the Hilton Hotel Charlemont this year on Saturday 31 August. It’s E20 per head, and booking is essential as capacity is restricted. Please pay by bank transfer or to any committee member as soon as possible to book your place (and advise of any special dietary requirements).
DFR Committee meeting
We have a committee meeting coming up next week, so if you have any suggestions or issues you’d like to raise, please let club secretary Kieran Cooney know at email@example.com no later than Saturday 27 July.
Dublin 10 mile road championship
The third race in the Dublin Series – the Frank Duffy 10 miles – takes place in the Phoenix Park on Sat 24 August. This doubles as the AAI Dublin County Board team championship, so if you are entering please ensure you note DFR as the club, as all entrants score towards an overall club position.
Rock n Roll half marathon 5 Aug
We’re still keen to cobble together a team entry if enough are planning to run it… we only seem to have two at the moment, but need four, so if you’re planning to enter, let me know.
Other results and events
Well done on some recent events for which I have info:

Various Voices Festival 2014
Our German Dublin Front Runner Ingo Petersen has a request for help:
“As you are probably aware off, that the Various Voices Festival is in Ireland next year, exactly in Dublin. See the link below.
There will be some of us coming around the 13th-16th June 2014. I will have accommodation, but there are one, may be two gay couples who are looking for private accommodation for some days. They are all singing in the Munich Gay Choir, which is called “Philhomoniker”. And they will participate in the festival. If anyone from the running club could offer a place to stay. I know it is all a bit early, but you know, how organised Germans are. They need to know in time. And all the accommodation offered on the website is pretty much booked out.”
Thanks for sticking with me, I appreciate that’s a lot to digest, but there’s a lot happening!
Our culture night out to Gaze Film Festival, see it’s not all about running and I’ve eventually read the program and chosen 2 movies both on at 8:30pm in the Lighthouse Cinema.
Margarita has gotten better reviews, and that’s the one I’ll be going too, but people may prefer the other one. We’ll head to the Front Lounge for a few drinks afterwards and a debrief.
Belated congrats to everyone who competed in Achill;
Frank Macken (our newest member, who had the nerve to be first DFR home on his first outing)
There was also a 10k for the first time this year, and well done in particular to Mick Smyth who showed what he can do when not getting carted off to a Dutch hospital with a fantastic top 25 finish, but also to:
Jochen van der Worp
Comiserations to Pat Lonergan who unfortunately got injured the Wednesday prior to the half, but still travelled to support.
Now that the concerts are over for another year, we’ll be back again at the Car Park from Wednesday night. We still have a Wednesday run outside of the park somewhere on the south side coming up, more details to follow.
DFR social calendar
A message from our busy socialite Andy:
Your social secretary has been hard at work over the last few days, after a successful Pride run we deserve a little socialising.
The Hilton hotel on Charlemont Place is booked for the Saturday 31 August for our annual BBQ, there’s a great outdoor area and we have part of the bar just in case the sun doesn’t shine. It’s right beside the Luas Charlemont stop.
Cost is only E20 per person (thanks to a small subsidy from DFR!) and advance booking is required as capacity is restricted.
If you’re paying by online bank transfer, please be sure to note your name and event and adivse our Treasurer Davey.
Gaze Film Festival
The film festival is on in early August, once the program is out I will do some in depth research and pick something suitably artistic to go see, and a few drinks afterwards. I’ll probably skip the artistic film and watch something over 18’s myself 🙂
London Pride Run
London Frontrunners Pride run is on Saturday August 17th this year, if you’re interested in going let me know, it would be great if we could organise a few runners to represent the club. Details on their website;
I know it’s a long way off but we’re provisionally looking at Saturday December 14 for our Christmas do, venue to be confirmed, put the date in your diaries.
Dublin Pride Festival
Hopefully everyone had a good day and night out; thanks to those members who marched behind the DFR banner or popped up around town to support.
Thanks especially to Kieran Cooney and Andy Chambers, our highly-trained official marshals who bravely put themselves in the firing line in case of any danger, and where very well accessorized.
We had fewer DFRs marching this year, so if anyone has any suggestions as to how DFR could better engage with or partake in Pride 2014, please let us know on the Committee.
The summer course of pilates starts this Tuesday 2 July at 7pm in St Andrew’s Resource Centre, 114 Pearse St.
It’s E60 (no subsidy from DFR) for the six week course, payable up front, and don’t forget your mat and the application form.
Thanks to Kieran Cooney for organising this, contact him on firstname.lastname@example.org with any last-minute queries or interest.
Fartlek continues every Monday at 7pm at the Magazine Fort in the Phoenix Park. Good luck to Anne Marie who’s leading the session this week!
Rock n Roll half marathon
Discounted entry for this race in Dublin on Monday 5 August (the bank holiday) expires tomorrow 1 July. Sign up if you’re interested and we’ll look to enter a DFR Team. So far, Seamus Moore, Dermot McCarthy and Declan Treanor have expressed an interest, so one more needed….
Achill half marathon
We’ve had a few late withdrawals from Achill so if anyone has a race number or accommodation to offer, please let the club know.
If anyone needs a lift over, or can offer a lift, please post on Facebook or email Rónán.
