News Update

Our summer fartlek kicks off next Monday 27 May at 19.00 at the Magazine Fort in the Phoenix Park. For those of you not familiar with it, it’s a gut-wrenching, muscle-straining, body-aching, masochistic way to spend a Monday evening. But seriously, fartlek is a very structured training programme with hills, sprints and intervals. It’s a great complement to standard training for pretty much any run, particularly the longer distances. Thanks to Steve Connolly for taking this again; if anyone would like to help out with the odd session, please let Steve or myself know.

DFR 5k Pride Run

Hard to believe we’re now only one month away from Friday 21 June! Thanks to all who have volunteered to help out on the day – we have enough stewards etc for the moment, so I strongly urge every other DFR member to sign up as soon as possible. It’s your club’s run! You each have to make it a success.

Please also encourage friends, family, colleagues to sign up as well. Why not enter a workplace team for a little competitive edge? A gentle, flat 5k run on a fine summer’s evening* is a very achievable target for most people.

While we can’t register minors under 16, they’re very welcome to participate on the evening if under parental supervision and responsibility.

* fine summer evening not guaranteed. No refunds!

Cultural night out

“What am I to do for high culture, now that the Gay Theatre Festival and Eurovision are over?” I hear you ask plaintively. Well, yet again, our music maestro Seamus is to the rescue with a suggestion for an evening out in the National Concert Hall. In his own words:

Dear Frontrunners, dear friends

The final concert in the National Symphony Orchestra season takes place on Friday week, 31st May in National Concert Hall at 8pm. The concert is a really, really good one i.e.

Tchaikovsky, 1st Piano Concerto – big, bold, hear of sleeve melodies – virtuoso piano playing by soloist Kirill Gerstein. Shostakovich, Symphony No. 5 – dramatic masterpiece, bold intensity and striking contrasts – fantastic music!

If you are free and fancy coming along, just go online to to book a ticket. We generally go to choir balcony, tickets are only €10. Book soon if going as this one will be popular!

Meeting in Conrad Hilton across the road from 7pm for a drink in advance (downstairs bar) or else in Foyer of NCH (beside Music Box CD shop) at 7.50.

Concert ends 9.45pm or so – plenty of time for us to paint the town red afterwards!!

Grateful if you could let me know if going.

Your in running and in music!!

Committee meeting

Your DFR committee will be meeting this Thursday 16 May.  We’ve plenty to discuss as usual, chiefly the ongoing preparations for the Pride Run (have you registered yet? or volunteered yet?)

If you have any issues you’d like the committee to consider, please advise club secretary Kieran Cooney ( by close of business this Wednesday (15th).

For our newer members, the committee comprises:

Chairman Ronan MacMuiris
Secretary Kieran Cooney
Treasurer Dave Prendergast
Pride Run race director Dave Shaw
Web/social Andy Chambers
Race/competition Aidan Rodgers
Women/Couch to 5k Val Maher

If you’re interested, hopefully by now you’ll have returned the discounted postal entry form. Please also let me know if you’ll be attending the Ferndale dinner on the Saturday night. We’ll organise car-pooling closer to the date.

Well done to all who got up before the crack of dawn last weekend for the Darkness into Light run for Pieta House.  On your way to the Park at 4am you may well have passed a few DFRs on their way home after a late night out…

Theatre Festival outing

There was a good crowd of boys out last Saturday night for “Stripped” (yes, he did, the full Monty) and the girls also had their night out in North Great George’s St (which is a good bit north of South Great George’s St).  And then a big crowd out for post-theatre critical analysis and size comparisons in the Front Lounge afterwards. Thanks to Andy for the selection.

Pride Run

It’s getting closer – less than six weeks away – so please register if you haven’t done so, or make yourself available to help out on the day.  We have plenty of flyers available for distribution.

Northern FrontRunners Fun Run

This year Northern Frontrunners will host their second LGBT 5K Fun Run in Newcastle. Following the success of last years event race organisers are confident of an even bigger and better event. The run is being held to mark the beginning of Northern Pride festival which follows the day after where in 2012 over 23,000 LGBT descended on site to celebrate LGBT life, promote diversity within Newcastle.

Theatre Festival night outDublinGayTheatre

Just a reminder our Theatre night out is tonight, I’ll be in Grogan’s across from Powerscourt Centre from about 8:30 for a few drinks before Strip Tease, if you’re meeting up before Brown and Out let me know and I’ll put the details up.

The Front Lounge is the destination afterwords for a few drinks and a critique of the shows, I’ll be focusing mainly on the plot 🙂
